Flexible working arrangements

At a glance (Summary)

Flexible working arrangements let eligible employees change how, where or when they work. Under Fair Work Act 2009 (Cth) s 65, a request can be made if you meet the criteria (see Section 2). A parent returning from parental leave may request to return part‑time. Employers must consider requests and respond in writing within 21 days.

  • Typical changes: hours (start/finish), patterns (compressed/part‑time), location (work from home), or rostering.
  • If not technically eligible, you can still ask informally — many employers support flexibility.
