Continuity, substitution & interaction with leave
- Continuity of service: A public holiday does not break continuous service.
- Annual leave: If a public holiday falls during approved annual leave, the day is treated as a public holiday (not annual leave) and shouldn’t be deducted.
- Personal/carer’s leave: You do not need to take personal leave for a public holiday (you’re paid for the public holiday if otherwise entitled).
- Rostered day off & days you don’t normally work: If the holiday falls on a day you don’t ordinarily work, there’s usually no separate entitlement unless your instrument provides one.
- Substitution: Some instruments allow substituting another day — check process and consent requirements.
