Hierarchy of controls — examples

  • Eliminate hazards and associated risks where reasonably practicable.
  • Reduce risk by combining controls, such as:
    • Altering the system of work (workload, staffing, rostering, task design)
    • Altering the workplace layout
    • Altering the workplace environment (noise, temperature, space)
    • Changing the objects/tools used
  • Administrative controls — Policies, procedures, training, supervision, reporting and support pathways.
  • Review controls regularly to ensure effectiveness.
