Notice & evidence (and privacy)
- Notify ASAP: Tell your employer as soon as practicable and indicate how long you expect to be away. Update them if this changes.
- Evidence: Provide evidence that would satisfy a reasonable person that the leave is for the stated purpose. Common examples include a medical certificate or a statutory declaration. If evidence is not provided, paid leave may be refused.
- Privacy: When taking carer’s leave, you do not need to disclose a family member’s detailed diagnosis — it is sufficient that they have an illness/injury or emergency requiring your care.
- Payslips & records: Payslips need not show your balance, but you have a right to request your leave records.
