Independent Medical Examinations

Before and during the IME

  • Ask to address the employer’s questions directly first — an IME may not be necessary.
  • Request the direction to attend, the instructions to the IME and all materials provided to the examiner in writing.
  • If the employer’s information is inaccurate or incomplete, raise this with both the employer and the IME before the exam.
  • Ensure the IME is asked to consider reasonable adjustments alongside the inherent requirements.
  • Ask for a copy of the report to be provided to you.
  • If concerned about independence or likely findings, consider arranging your own medical assessment (at your cost) to provide contrary evidence.
